So, thanks for the kind words about the book and good luck on the thesis!
kpAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6491558654582598669.post-43417267344670907342008-09-26T09:17:00.000-07:002008-09-26T09:17:00.000-07:00You make fair points about any of the undead/used ...You make fair points about any of the undead/used to be human monsters. Zombies are just one example that, as you know, are a particular favorite of mine.

There are examples of monsters that are so alien (often literally aliens) to humanity that perhaps they can't possibly remind us of ourselves and it is in their alienness that they are horrifying... But I'm less interested in this, I suppose. In the books we read (now I can't remember which one, or it may have been multiple) for my film class, one of them talked about an era where the villains and monsters in horror film were depicted as purely evil, and humans are set against them, perhaps not as purely good, but as morally superior. I'm less interested in this kind of scenario.

I don't know if I'm going to be writing and analyzing my own stuff anymore, considering that I didn't manage to finish writing anything this summer.Aynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03534968356995054787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6491558654582598669.post-4176524637086092762008-09-25T22:43:00.000-07:002008-09-25T22:43:00.000-07:00You've obviously done a lot of thought on this sin...You've obviously done a lot of thought on this since I talked to you last about it. Are you going to write as well as analyze, still, or are you planning on canning the fiction portion of the paper?

And, I dunno, but the "zombies as human monsters" can be broadened significantly to include not only zombies but most of the undead. In particular werewolves and vampires which are I think direct parallels for the evils of our more animalistic urges and violent bloodlust, respectively. Then again, any monster that takes on vaguely human form or can be in any way created from a human falls into that category. Er. I don't actually have any insight, I'm just blathering, so I'll stop.

But good luck with the BA!Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03838351800414878044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6491558654582598669.post-70899349708150604332008-09-24T13:16:00.000-07:002008-09-24T13:16:00.000-07:00If this is THE Kendall Phillips, then I'm flattere...If this is THE Kendall Phillips, then I'm flattered you took the time to read through my mess of thoughts. I really enjoyed your book.

My intent for this paper (which is the culmination of my undergraduate program, and supposed to be about 30 pages) is actually to focus on short form literary works. I hadn't thought of Kafka; I guess I hadn't considered him as fitting into the genre (though only having read "The Metamorphosis" I can see tie-ins to a discussion of abjection). Was there a particular work you had in mind when you wrote that?Aynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03534968356995054787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6491558654582598669.post-34554812915871198032008-09-24T12:56:00.000-07:002008-09-24T12:56:00.000-07:00interesting stuff - i think the 'i am legend' nove...interesting stuff - i think the 'i am legend' novel will be quite an interesting as it is a potentially interesting take on the whole notion. and may actually play both scenarios together (but you'll see that once you've read the book - though not the recent movie which was good but lost the books poignant punch)

perhaps some kafka fits in as well but that may be too literary for your purposes.

anyway, good thinking and i look forward to reading more.

kendallAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
