I need a new laptop--any suggestions?

At the risk of eclipsing the post I made just before this...

My laptop is dying. As I mentioned before, its battery is kaput and the power cord only works if I keep the laptop as still as possible (otherwise, it shuts off without warning, as I've had to remove the battery in order to get the power cord to work at all). This is my second replacement battery, by the way. Additionally, since mid-summer the wireless only work sporadically, which is a joy.

I am getting a new laptop. But I am having a heck of a time finding one I'm happy with, so I figured I'd go fishing for suggestions. Here are my basic criteria:
  • weighs less than 5lb (but is bigger than a netbook)
  • must have better than 2.5 hours of battery life on average
  • must not be ugly
  • trackpad preferable to nub
You may notice I didn't mention a budget. Obviously, cheaper is better, and the computer must be worth the price (I was originally looking at Vaio, but they seem a little expensive for their specs). Before you ask, yes, I, a life-long PC user, am considering getting a MacBook. However, cost, combined with the hassel of switching operating systems, strongly factors in to my reluctance to jump on the MacBandwagon.

So, let's hear your suggestions. I promise you I've looked around a lot, but I'll listen. I currently have a Toshiba Satellite; I've had enough problems with battery life and this comp that I'm reluctant to look there again. I want to hear what's worked for you; if you use both PCs and Macs or if you've switched to Mac how it worked out, etc. All right...go!

I got a decent looking Toshiba at Best Buy for around $500 last spring.

I think it weighs around 6lbs.

One nice thing is that you can always skin your laptop no matter what it looks like.

for example.. http://www.skinit.com/devices/laptop

I really like my HP laptop. It's the dv6605us. I like the HP tech support too. They are helpful.

Hey, I just came across your blog and I have to comment on your post, since I'm a bit laptop fan! I have a Sony Vaio that I bought about 4 years ago and even though I use it every day, it's still working great. But my sister recently bought an Apple Macbook Pro, and if I were to buy a new laptop, I would definitely go with that. I watched the Godfather DVD on it last weekend, and it was like magic :) Good luck on your search :)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. My dad came up with an interesting solution that solves a lot of the problems I'm having with needing to compromise: get one laptop with good performance, and one that's portable. This seems a bit extravagant, except the ones we're looking at actually cost less overall than a new MacBook. The Acer Aspire One netbook is arrive today or Friday for me to play with, so we'll see!

That's really cool.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing.

One of the things about the Macbook's is that I could have bought my laptop 4x for the cost and it doesn't really do that much more than what mine can do.

I would like to have a Macbook for the multiple boot capabilities.. ..but I can do that on my machine at 1/4 the cost too.
